Affordable Low Crime Retirement Places

Where are the best SAFE affordable places to retire? These days affordable retirement is a bit tougher to find, especially if you don’t want to give up safety or lifestyle options. Maybe you’ve looked into retirement in Decatur, Prescott, St. Augustine, Grand Junction, or Punta Gorda…but do they make the cut? Are these inexpensive retirement towns that top so many other lists also low in violent crime? We have a tougher criteria; only those with cost of living 10% or more less than the national average, as well as low violent crime stats made our list. Safety Counts…at Least on Our List

Here’s what we found out. Below is our long list of affordable, low crime retirement towns. Many are very small but there are a few surprising entries in the 50-80,000 range. Which cheap places to retire fit your idea of a great place to live? We used the most recent violent crime stats from the FBI Uniform Crime Reporting website data to enhance our list by giving preference to affordable places that also have low crime rankings. We left out the really small places, and any cities over 300,000 because city stats are well represented on other lists.

We’ll add to this list over time, but right now here are the ones that meet the test of affordable with less violent crime than other towns and cities of the same size. All of these towns and cities have populations between 3,000 and 300,000. Our Personal Picks are Featured in Best Places. We’ve started with the most popular states for retirement and may expand the list to include other states. States and towns are listed in alphabetical order.
